The Last of Us 2 is a action-adventure horror game developed by Naughty Dog. It launched in June on the Playstation 4. Recently, Naughty Dog announced that the game will be receiving a free update. The Last of Us 2 Grounded Update will release August 13th 2020, adding in a new, harder difficulty mode along with a range of other new features.
The headline addition in this free update is the return of Grounded difficulty, which was also added to the first game as a post-release DLC. This difficulty option ramps up the challenge by removing the HUD and Listen Mode. The enemies will also be deadlier and smarter. This isn’t the only way that combat encounters will be made harder though. Pickups will be significantly reduced, meaning that you will have less ammo and resources to help you beat the game.
If you are looking for more trivial changes to the game, Naughty Dog have something for you too. There will be a range of gameplay modifiers added into the game through the extras menu. If you want to play the game without worrying about resources, there will be infinite crafting and infinite ammo options. The trailer also highlights other modifiers, such as mirror world which will completely flip the level design.
Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4 contained fun graphics filters, and The Last of Us 2 will be receiving these too. The trailer shows off loads of cool new filters to bring a different atmosphere to the game. For example, you can make the game look retro with the pixelated filter, or even make it cel-shaded like the Borderlands series. These don’t add any new gameplay changes, but they are great for those of you who like taking creative screenshots of your video games.
Grounded mode makes the game significantly harder. Permadeath mode takes it to another level entirely. This mode gives you only one life, and when you die that’s it. No respawning, no second chances. This is an intense challenge for a 20+ hour game like The Last of Us 2, but it should satisfy those of you who continue to be engrossed with the game two months after release.
With the addition of the Grounded and Permadeath modes comes two new trophies, earned for beating each new respective mode. The trophy for beating Grounded mode is Silver, and you’ll earn a bronze trophy for beating Permadeath mode… seems a bit measly to me. Neither of these will count towards the Platinum trophy for the game, as reported by Push Square.
Other New Features
Two new features that weren’t highlighted in the trailer are certainly worth mentioning. Firstly, for those of you who think the film grain in The Last of Us 2 is too intense, you’ll now be able to adjust the film grain through the options menu.
Secondly, gyro aiming is also being added to the game! This will allow you to use your Dualshock 4 to aim with motion controls. This is a great addition to the game, although it is one that has featured in surprisingly few Playstation titles. Days Gone gave you the option for aiming, whilst Gran Turismo Sport, Driveclub and GTA V used gyro aiming for turning vehicles. Other than these, the gyro aiming feature was rarely used for Playstation 4 games. Hopefully, it’s addition to The Last of Us 2 encourages more developers to utilise the feature during the next console generation.
The Last of Us 2 Grounded update will release Thursday August 13th 2020. Who plans on jumping back into the game to give the Permadeath and Grounded modes a go?
